Artist Statement: Traveling Colt
Samuel Colt’s business was dependent on his abilities to secure contracts for
his guns from different locations, which were often in conflict with one another. His entrepreneurship and curiosity caused him to travel all across the world. Both as a performer and then as a gun seller, he was an honorable guest in major European courts, and met with Russian Tsars and Turkish Ottomans. chameleon changes its color depending on the environment. This idea of rhetorical and visual camouflage is an important element of military strategy used then and today. Similarly, our awareness of objects in space is dependent on color and surroundings. These mandala forms composed of guns and ship wheels allude to Colt’s travels and chameleon character through the manipulation of color.
